So I put on an episode of To the Best of Our Knowledge, and decided to make some mint lemonade.

Boil 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar, turn off heat when sugar has dissolved. Add in mint leaves (I don’t know if the amount matters- I used about 2 tablespoons maybe). Let sit for 10 minutes. Drain out mint leaves. Add lemon juice to the mint syrup until you have the right sweet/tart combo. This is your concentrated lemonade. I added about 3 cups of water to this mix to make a big jug. You could split it up into numerous batches, and put some in the freezer for another time.

http://gawker.com/5109382/the-top-10-worst-pop-culture-bits-of-the-year

http://gawker.com/5109382/the-top-10-worst-pop-culture-bits-of-the-year

Reverse Graffiti- try it!

Reverse Graffiti- try it!

Tomorrow, while having a very awkward lunch meeting with the...

Tomorrow, while having a very awkward lunch meeting with the attorneys I work for, I will be dreaming of living somewhere like this, where giant surprises wash up on shore.

yo grandma

yo grandma

working life

Tomorrow I will have completed my first full week of work, and my first 40 hour week ever. And to commemorate this momentous occasion, I will be running the office all on my own.

Spending so much time in one space, and embarking on the same routine every morning makes “Ground Hog’s Day” much more relevant. I see the same bikers on the way to work, get stuck at the train tracks, the same hauler nearly hits me at the intersection of Church and Franklin, and that is just the first 15 minutes of my day. The rest of the day unfolds in the same predictable manner.

Highlights of the week:

Finding out I work next door to my ex-boyfriend’s mother’s place of employment

Getting propositioned by men on the snake bridge

Figuring out what that big pink building with the dome on it is (Pima County Consolidated Justice Court)

Still not knowing the difference between Justice Court and Superior Court

Spending most of my time translating legalese

And today, Mary telling the runner she hopes he fucking dies, and realizing how happy I am that I am no longer 19.

Things are looking up

New Job: start today

From 1860 until early in the 20th century, these books were the only text books used in American public schools.

Grant and I went to Bisbee yesterday, and I picked up “Our Times: America Finding Herself” by Mark Sullivan from 1932. As far as I can tell, the book is a review of popular trends and themes that emerged at the turn of the century. The book covers Education, Discipline, Industry, Oil, Government etc. So far I’ve read “The American Mind: Education,” which inspired the McGuffy purchase.

”A historian, if asked who was the most popular American of the second half of the nineteenth century, might answer incorrectly, if his researches had been confined to the more useful fields of investigation. He might, bearing in mind the regard for old soldiers for a military hero, answer Grant; or recalling the martyr of the Civil War, say Lincoln. Probably he would not think at all of the one who was really most popular, in the sense of being most affectionately remembered, who was named McGuffey.”

I’m not sure what fascinates me about these books, but I am really excited to read through them.

Some of my favorite quotes so far:

“Birds in their little nests agree, And why can’t we?”

After the shower, the tranquil sun; Silver stars when the day is done… After the bud, the radiant rose: After the weeping, sweet repose… After the flight the downy nest; Beyond the shadowy river—rest.

These, with the goofy, clumsy pen illustrations, make me really excited to get the entire set. I’m also excited to read the rest of America Finding Herself.

Ron Paul on the ‘theory’ of evolution

Ron Paul on the ‘theory’ of evolution
